Tips & Advice

Newborn Photography Session

~ Feed baby before appointment allowing a bit of time for burping, diaper changes and settling down.

~ Baby should be ready for sound sleep during appointment.

~ Bring baby to appointment clothed in diaper and loose-fitting clothing, such as a onesie or layette, to avoid red, elastic marks, etc.

~ Please wear layers and comfortable clothing on yourself as the room will be heated to keep naked baby warm and sleepy. Soft music or white noise will also be playing.

~ Prepare to be asked to leave the room should baby become restless.  Babies smell their mamas and sometimes this makes them want to eat, etc. causing them to be restless.  We need sleeping babies for complete success.

~ Know that I have had four babies of my own and am comfortable and experienced with babies.

~ Newborn Sessions typically take around 2 hours depending on how sleepy baby is.  I work on baby time.  If baby needs to eat or be changed, we totally take time for that.  If baby needs a bit of cuddling to be assured that Mom is close by, we take time for that, too.  There is no pressure on my schedule as I allow plenty of time for my Newborns.  I ask that you do the same.

~ I typically tend not to be super chatty during a Newborn Session as I am focused on your baby and keeping baby safe and comfy. Please don’t think I am being snobby.

~ By all means, come relaxed and comfortable.  Bring that favorite magazine or that book that has been lying on your bedside stand waiting for you to open.  This should be a time for you to relax and enjoy.  And, if you fall asleep in my comfy, big chair while you wait, I will be so happy that you were able to catch a few much-needed ZZZ’s.  Trust me, I have so been there.

Family and Child Photography Session

~ Make sure your kids are well-rested and fed before your photography session.

~ Try not to overpressure your kids about behavior and smiles, etc.  Kids are great and have great smiles and expressions when allowed to feel safe and comfortable vs. feeling like they have to perform.

~ Know that I have four kids of my own and have a ton of experience with kids.  They do not intimidate me, nor does anything surprise me.

~ If there is a cooperation problem with a child, I may ask the rest of the family to step away so that I can talk to the child and get some natural shots of that child. (Sometimes they feel nervous if the rest of the family is watching them.)

~ Please avoid asking your child to say, “cheese” or other words that cause them to smile unnaturally.

~ Coordinating outfits can be challenging especially when trying to be resourceful and economical with what is already in your closets.  Please don’t be afraid to ask me for suggestions and input.  I am interested in creating a look with you that coordinates and compliments.  I can help you come up with a color palette and find items you may already have to put together as well as give shopping suggestions.

~ There are really no rules when it comes to colors, etc.  However, I may suggest colors that will work best at the location you have chosen.

~ Avoid tshirts, baseball hats, and tennis shoes if at all possible.

~ Accessorize!  Accessorize!  And bring lots of options for accessories.  Think hats, scarves, jewelry, boot socks, leg warmers, etc.

~ Layer! Layer!  Layers are super trendy and give a complete fashion look.

~ Don’t forget about hair, makeup and nails.  Consider getting your hair and makeup done by a professional.  (I have a couple great recommendations if you need them.) A mani and pedi are definitely not necessary but something you might want to consider.

~ Don’t forget to HAVE FUN together as a family…after all, you are creating beautiful memories together.
